Lecture Study 4: Exploring the Etheric and Astral Basis of Cognition A Foundation for Understanding Psychopathology.
This workshop will bring to a conclusion a cycle of intensive lecture study meetings that began at Emerson College some 4 years ago, originally inaugurated by Dr. Pablo Jeczmien, joined soon afterwards by Dr. James Dyson and, from its inception, led by Dr. Broder von Laue, known to many physicians worldwide and over many decades as a medical teacher who brings particularly rigorous disciplines to the interpretation of Steiner’s lectures.
This series of meetings originally had the aim of furthering an understanding of the Etheric, specifically in its relation to an anthroposophic and spiritual picture of the deeper, fourfold processes underlying psychopathology. As this study has progressed, participants have also been able to widen and deepen an understanding of crucial aspects of both the spiritual and traumatic aetiology of mental health disorders very considerably, albeit for the most part remaining only at a more general level.
Concurrently with but independently of this process, Dr. von Laue and Dr. Wolfgang Rissmann, formerly a leading anthroposphic psychiatrist at the Husemann Klinic in Germany, have been collaborating in researching and writing a seminal paper, in which these more general insights have become focused into an original diagnostic lens for discovering an organizing principle embracing the widest spectrum of psychopathologies.
In this forthcoming workshop in June, we will be studying their paper, subsequently published in the Merkurstab (i.e., the Journal of Anthroposophic Medicine in the German Language) in a working translation by Carlotta Dyson, which both summarises and extends the field of study we have been pursuing throughout the last four years. i.e., throughout this series of workshops at Emerson College.
It is the intention behind this final forthcoming workshop in this series to welcome the participation of newcomers without previous experience in this particular series – though some professional background in the field of anthroposphic psychological counseling or mental health would clearly be a welcome prerequisite. It will, however, be our aim to provide the opportunity to those who have not previously participated to at least begin to grasp how the etheric plays its central role in the bio/psycho/spiritual origins of psychiatric pathologies, when considered from an anthroposophic perspective.
Since this highly original paper represents - as recognised by its authors - work in progress, this workshop will offer the platform and the opportunity for further research and contributions from participants. James and Pablo, who will both be facilitating and contributing to this event, warmly welcome you in anticipation of the opportunities it will hopefully provide as well as for future anthroposophic exploration into this theme, an understanding of which has never been more needed than at the present time.
